Highways & Roads

The most common application of Reinforced Earth® is for earth retention of road and highway structures. A Reinforced Earth® retaining wall is a gravity structure consisting of alternating layers of granular backfill and reinforcing strips with a modular pre-cast concrete facing. Using a crew of five and standard construction equipment, contractors can install 750-1,000 square feet of wall face per shift, using a simple, repetitive construction procedure. This procedure repeats until the design height is reached. Reinforced Earth retaining walls are suitable for very high or heavy loaded walls and can be built on compressible foundation soils or unstable slopes. In addition, Reinforced Earth is well suited for restricted sites or close property lines since construction is performed behind the wall face without any forms or scaffolding. This rapid, predictable and easy construction process, coupled with low materials volume, make Reinforced Earth an extremely cost-effective solution.

Since 1968, more than 150 million square feet of Reinforced Earth retaining wall has been erected along U.S. highways; saving owners and the public more than a billion dollars when compared to the cost of conventional structures.
